Sore throat

Sore throats can present as acute or chronic discomfort in the throat, often caused by viral or bacterial infections. Both viral and bacterial sore throats can exhibit similar symptoms, including sore throat, fever, runny nose, or cough. Diagnosis between the two may require a swab test to confirm bacterial presence, particularly in cases suspected of streptococcal infection. Treatment for viral sore throats typically involves managing symptoms with supportive care and medications. Conversely, antibiotics are often necessary for bacterial infections to prevent potential complications such as rheumatic fever or abscess formation.
