Ear infections

Ear infections encompass two primary types: Otitis externa and otitis media. Acute otitis externa affects the outer ear canal, often due to bacterial or fungal infections, presenting symptoms such as ear pain, itching, and discharge. Treatment typically involves antibiotic or antifungal ear drops, along with measures to keep the ear dry and clean. In contrast, otitis media involves inflammation and fluid buildup in the middle ear, commonly seen in children and often resulting from viral or bacterial infections. Symptoms include ear pain, fever, and sometimes hearing loss. Treatment may include pain relievers, antibiotics for bacterial infections, or watchful waiting for viral cases. In both types, obtaining ear swabs may help identify the specific pathogen for targeted treatment, ensuring effective resolution and preventing complications such as chronic infections or hearing loss.
